ICT IV (Lecture I) 2012

Computer – an electronic device designed to manipulate data for useful information to be generated.
Computer comes from the word compute.

The computer is an EDP (Electronic data processing) machine
Data – refers to any collection of facts about people, things, ideas, and events.
Information – is the processed data. It is data organized and presented in a meaningful form to make them useful.
Data processing - is the act of changing and transforming data into information.

Types of Data Processing
  1. Manual system – all operations are done by persons
  2. Manual – Mechanical system – Persons are assisted by machines like typewriters or calculators
  3. EDP system – It is the use of computer to process data.

 Basic Computer Operation

As an EDP machine, the computer regularly does the following.

Capacities or Basic operation of a computer:
  1. Input – Its capacity to receive data and instructions
  2. Process – its capacity to do computations and other operations.
  3. Output – its capacity to produce results called information.
  4. Storage – its capacity to keep or store input and output
GIGO – Garbage In, Garbage Out
Means that the kind of information derived from computer processing is similar to the kind of data entered into the computer.
The computer needs the right output in order to provide the right output. Give the computer a wrong input and it will surely give you a wrong output.
